🛑 SASSA Gold Card Stops Working After 31 August 2026

🚨 Urgent — Replace Your Gold Card Before 31 August 2026

Postbank is replacing all SASSA Gold Cards with new Black Cards. After 31 August 2026, your Gold Card will stop working completely. You will not be able to withdraw your grant money — even if your grant is approved and paid — until you replace the card.

🏢

Where to Replace

Visit any Postbank branch, Post Office that offers Postbank services, or your nearest SASSA service centre. You can find your nearest branch by calling Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.

📅

What to Bring

Your South African ID book or smart card. You do not need your old Gold Card to get the replacement. The new Black Card is completely free. Your grant is automatically linked to the new card.

Do Not Wait

Queues at Postbank branches are already very long. The closer to 31 August, the worse they will get. Go as early in the morning as possible and bring something to eat and drink.

✅ Already Have a Black Card?

If you already received a Postbank Black Card, you do not need to do anything. Your grant payments will continue as normal after 31 August 2026. If you are unsure whether your card is a Gold Card or Black Card, check the colour — Gold Cards are gold/yellow, Black Cards are black with the Postbank logo.

How to Check Your SASSA Balance

There are four ways to check how much money is in your SASSA account or on your card. All methods are free:

📱 USSD — No Data Needed

*120*3210#

Dial this from any phone. Works without data or airtime. Follow the menu to check your Postbank balance. Free.

🏭 ATM

Any ATM

Insert your Postbank Black Card and select Balance Enquiry. Works at any South African ATM. Some ATMs charge a small fee — use a Postbank or SASSA ATM to avoid charges.

📱 Postbank App

📞 Call Postbank

⚠️ Approved But No Money Showing?

If your status shows Approved with a payment date but your balance is still zero, check that your banking details are correct at srd.sassa.gov.za. Funds process overnight and are usually available from 8–9 am on your payment date. If still nothing by midday the next day, call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 first, then SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

How to Update Your Banking Details

If your payment is not arriving or you have changed banks, update your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za. This is one of the most important things to keep current — incorrect details are the number one cause of approved grants not being paid.

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on any phone or computer.
  2. Click "Update Banking Details" or the banking section on the main menu.
  3. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and registered cellphone number.
  4. Verify your identity with the OTP sent to your registered phone number.
  5. Select your bank from the list and enter your account number and account type.
  6. Double-check every digit of your account number before submitting. A single wrong digit causes payment failure.
  7. Submit and wait for the confirmation SMS on your registered number.
  8. Changes take 2–3 business days to reflect. Your next payment will use the updated details.

⚠️ Account Must Be in Your Own Name

SASSA will only pay into a bank account registered in your name. You cannot use a parent's, spouse's, or friend's account. If you do not have a personal bank account, open a free Capitec or TymeBank account before updating your details — both can be opened with just your ID.

Supported Banks — Which Account Can You Use?

SASSA accepts accounts from all major South African banks. Here is a full list with the account types that work and any important notes:

💡 No Bank Account? Open One for Free

Capitec and TymeBank are the easiest banks to open an account with. Capitec requires only your South African ID — you can open an account at any Capitec branch in minutes. TymeBank can be opened at Pick n Pay or Boxer stores using your ID and a selfie. Both accounts are free with no monthly fees.

Why Your Banking Details Might Be Rejected

SASSA rejects banking details for specific reasons. Here is every reason and how to fix each one:

  • 1
Account not in your own name

SASSA only accepts accounts registered in your personal name. Joint accounts or accounts in another person's name will be rejected.

Fix: Open a personal account at Capitec or TymeBank with your ID
  • 2
    Wrong account number

A single incorrect digit causes SASSA's payment to fail. The money bounces back to SASSA and your next payment cycle is delayed.

Fix: Check your account number on your bank card, app, or statement — then re-enter it carefully
  • 3
    Account is closed or dormant

If you have not used your account for more than 6 months, it may have been closed or made dormant by your bank.

Fix: Contact your bank to reactivate the account, or open a new one and update your details
  • 4
Using a savings account that does not accept deposits

Some savings account types are set up as "withdraw only" or have restrictions on incoming deposits.

Fix: Call your bank and confirm the account can receive external deposits before updating with SASSA
  • 5
Account linked to a different ID number

If your bank account was opened with a different ID number (such as an old or incorrect one), SASSA's verification may reject it.

Fix: Contact your bank to confirm the ID number linked to your account matches your current ID

How to Collect Your SASSA Payment

Once your payment date arrives, you can collect your money in three ways:

🏭

Bank Account — Direct Deposit

Funds are deposited directly into your registered bank account. Available from 8–9 am on your payment date. Check your balance via your banking app or ATM. No action needed on your part.

🏪

Cash at a Retailer

SASSA issues a cash send voucher. Collect at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, or Boxer on or after your payment date. Show your South African ID at the cashier. No card required.

💳

Postbank Black Card

Withdraw at any ATM or spend at retailers that accept debit cards. Use USSD *120*3210# to check your balance before going to the ATM. Remember: replace your Gold Card before 31 August 2026.

💰 Your Money Does Not Expire

If you cannot collect on your payment date, your money stays in your account or on your card until you withdraw it. There is no deadline to collect and no penalty for collecting late. The only exception is if your bank account has been inactive for more than 6 months — in that case contact your bank to reactivate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Banking details must be updated at srd.sassa.gov.za or at a SASSA office in person. Never share your banking details, account number, or PIN via WhatsApp or with anyone claiming to update them on your behalf — this is a common scam that results in your payments being redirected to someone else's account.

After 31 August 2026, your Gold Card will stop working completely. You will not be able to withdraw money from ATMs or make purchases. Your grant will still be approved and paid — it just cannot be accessed with the Gold Card. Visit any Postbank branch after the deadline with your ID to get a Black Card and access your funds.
