Every Status Explained Exact Next Steps Device-by-Device Guide

How to Check Your Status at srd.sassa.gov.za

The official SASSA SRD status portal is srd.sassa.gov.za. The check is free, takes under one minute, and works on any device. Here is how:

  1. Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Do not use any other website — only this is official.
  2. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number exactly as printed on your ID document. No spaces.
  3. Enter the cellphone number you used when you first applied — not your current number if it has changed.
  4. Click Submit. You may receive an OTP to verify your identity.
  5. Your result appears immediately. If approved, your personal payment date is also shown on the same screen.
  6. Take a screenshot of your approved result — this is your official proof of approval.

⚠️ Site Is Offline Between Midnight and 4 am

srd.sassa.gov.za goes offline for maintenance overnight. If you see "Service Unavailable", your grant is not affected — try again after 6 am. The site is available 24 hours on all other days including weekends and public holidays.

What Every Status Result Means — And Your Exact Next Step

Most people check their status but do not know what to do with the result. Here is every possible status explained with the specific action you need to take:

✅ Approved — Payment Date Shown

Your grant is confirmed for this month. Your personal payment date is shown on the same screen. SASSA will also SMS your registered number when payment is processed.

Wait for your payment date. No action needed.

✅ Approved — No Payment Date Yet

You are approved but no date appears yet. Dates are assigned in batches. Most likely cause: your banking details have an error, or your date simply has not been assigned yet.

Check banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za. Check again in 3 days.

⌛ Pending

SASSA is still verifying your application for this month against government databases. This is normal early in the month. Pending does not mean declined.

Check again in 2–3 days. If pending 30+ days, call 0800 60 10 11.

❌ Declined — Income Detected

SASSA found income in your account or databases above R624/month. This is often a false positive — family transfers, loans, or old employment records can trigger this.

Appeal within 90 days at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals with bank statements.

❌ Declined — Other Reason

Read the exact reason shown on your result screen. Each reason requires a different response. See the full appeal guide for what to write for each decline reason.

Appeal within 90 days. See appeal guide →

🕵 Identity Verification Failed

Your ID details do not match Home Affairs records. This cannot be fixed online. You must visit in person. Until it is resolved, all monthly applications will fail.

Visit SASSA office with your green ID book or smart card. Also go to Home Affairs.

🏠 Bank Account Pending

You are approved but your banking details are missing, incorrect, or the account has been closed. SASSA cannot pay you without valid banking details.

Update banking details immediately at srd.sassa.gov.za. Account must be in your name.

📋 Referred to SASSA

A SASSA official has been assigned to manually review your case. This is not a rejection. It often happens when automated checks produce an unclear result.

Wait up to 30 days. If no update after 30 days, call 0800 60 10 11.

🚫 Cancelled

Your grant has been stopped. If you did not request cancellation, contact SASSA immediately — this can sometimes indicate that someone else has tampered with your account.

Call 0800 60 10 11 immediately. To restart, reapply at srd.sassa.gov.za.

Common Errors When Checking — And How to Fix Each One

"ID number not found" or "No record found"

You are either entering the wrong ID number, or you applied with a different ID document. Make sure you enter all 13 digits with no spaces or dashes.

Fix: Double-check your ID book or smart card. Call 0800 60 10 11 if the error continues.

"Phone number does not match"

You must enter the exact phone number you registered with when you first applied — not your current number if it has changed since then.

Fix: Update your phone number at srd.sassa.gov.za first, then check your status.

OTP never arrives

Your phone may have no signal, be in airplane mode, or your number may have changed. OTPs expire after 5 minutes.

Fix: Check signal strength. Request a new OTP. If number changed, update at srd.sassa.gov.za or visit SASSA office.

"Service Unavailable" or blank page

The portal is offline for maintenance (midnight to 4 am) or experiencing high traffic. Your grant status is not affected.

Fix: Try again after 6 am. Or use *134*7737# (USSD) as an alternative — it works even when the website is down.

Page loads but Submit button does not work

This is a browser compatibility issue. It most commonly happens on older versions of Safari on iPhones.

Fix: Switch to Chrome on your phone. Clear your browser cache and cookies. Try a different device.

Status shows Pending for more than 30 days

If your result has shown Pending for over 30 days, SASSA's automated verification may have flagged your case for manual review.

Fix: Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and ask for a manual review reference number. Write it down.

Application Status vs Monthly Grant Status — What Is the Difference?

Many people are confused by seeing different information at different times. Here is the difference between the two types of status:

📝

Application Status

This appears when you have recently applied for the first time. It shows whether SASSA has received and is processing your application. It may show "Application Received" or "Under Review" for 2–3 weeks before a decision is made.

Where to check: srd.sassa.gov.za

📈

Monthly Grant Status

Once approved, this shows whether you are approved, pending, or declined for the current month. SASSA re-evaluates this automatically every month. You do not need to reapply — just check your result each month.

Where to check: srd.sassa.gov.za (same portal)

Appeal Status

If you submitted an appeal after being declined, your appeal status is checked at a different website: srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. Enter the same ID and phone number. Each appealed month has its own status.

Protect Yourself — Fake Status Check Websites

There are many unofficial websites that claim to offer SASSA status checks. Some steal your personal information. Others charge you money. Here is how to stay safe:

🚫 The Only Official Status Check Website Is srd.sassa.gov.za

Do not enter your ID number or phone number on any other website. The official site never asks for payment, never asks for your banking PIN, and never asks for your OTP to be shared with anyone. If a site does any of these things, close it immediately and report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

🔑 How to Spot a Fake SASSA Website

Check the URL carefully before entering any information. The only official addresses are srd.sassa.gov.za and sassa.gov.za. Any variation — such as "sassa-status-check.co.za", "sassacheck.com", or any website with "SASSA" in the name but not ending in .gov.za — is unofficial and potentially dangerous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Checking your status at srd.sassa.gov.za is completely free. Never pay anyone to check your status on your behalf. The USSD method (*134*7737#) and WhatsApp (082 046 8553) are also free.

Pending means SASSA is still running its monthly verification checks on your application. It is normal for status to show Pending for the first 1 to 2 weeks of each month. If it stays Pending for more than 30 days, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and ask for a manual review reference number.

Yes. Dial *134*7737# from any South African phone. This USSD code works without internet data or airtime and gives you the same status result as the website. It is completely free.

Yes, this happens frequently. SASSA re-evaluates your eligibility every month against live government databases. If something changed in your bank account or government records — even a once-off deposit — it can cause a decline for that specific month. Submit an appeal at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals within 90 days if you believe the decline is wrong.

Check once a month, around the 15th to 20th of each month. SASSA processes monthly statuses throughout the month, so checking earlier than mid-month may show Pending when a decision has not yet been made. Checking more frequently does not change your result.

srd.sassa.gov.za is where you check your monthly grant status, update banking details, change your phone number, and apply. srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals is a completely separate website used only for submitting and checking appeals after a declined month. You need to use both sites at different times — the appeal site is only for declined months.

No. Your money does not expire on the payment date — it stays in your account or on your card until you collect it. If the date has passed and you have not received the money, first check your banking details are correct at srd.sassa.gov.za. Then call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 or SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
